Since April 2024, Airbnb has banned indoor security cameras entirely — anywhere in the listing, even if previously disclosed. Yet surveys suggest some hosts still use them. Knowing your rights as a guest and running a quick arrival check is the strongest protection your privacy has.
What the rules say
Airbnb's current policy prohibits indoor security cameras outright; doorbell cameras and noise monitors are allowed only when clearly disclosed in the listing. In most jurisdictions, covert filming of private spaces is also a criminal offense.
If you find any undisclosed camera inside your rental, you are looking at a clear violation of both platform rules and the law.
The 10-minute arrival routine
- Review every object facing the beds and bathroom — especially smoke detectors, alarm clocks, outlets, USB chargers and air purifiers.
- Turn off the lights and sweep with a flashlight for lens reflections; inspect any glassy glints up close.
- Scan the home's WiFi network and note unfamiliar camera-like devices.
- Run a BLE scan for anonymous Bluetooth devices nearby.
- Check light bulbs, plants, books and shelf decor — prioritizing anything angled toward the bed.
Lessons from real cases
Recent news shows how creative hiding spots can get: cameras were found inside a light bulb at a bungalow in Türkiye, inside wall outlets of rental flats in Pamukkale, and inside a smoke detector directly above the bed at a US Airbnb. The common thread: devices live inside powered objects or in spots with a clear angle on the bed or bathroom.
If you find a camera
- Do not touch the device; photograph it in place, both wide and close-up.
- You can leave the property or stay outside the camera's view — your safety comes first.
- Contact the police and file a written report with the platform; refunds and delisting can be requested.
- Leave removing and examining the device to law enforcement to preserve evidence.
Your phone is your most practical detector
You do not need special hardware: a modern phone's WiFi, Bluetooth, camera, microphone and magnetometer become a professional sweep kit with the right software. SenseRadar combines these six layers on a single radar screen and runs every analysis on-device — nothing you scan ever leaves your phone.
